Augusta Is Now Smokefree
Thank you, Augusta, and thank you to our local leaders! With your support, the Mayor and Commission has voted 6-4 to make Augusta-Richmond County smokefree. The new ordinance goes in place Jan. 1, 2019:
Ensuring all workplaces and public buildings are smokefree and vapefree
Moving smoking or vaping a reasonable distance from a workplace
Providing an exemption for current hookah bars and vape shops
Augusta is smokefree as of January 1, 2019
Did you know that just 5 minutes of exposure to secondhand smoke is equal to smoking a cigarette?
Augusta has joined communities across the nation
in providing smokefree workplaces to protect both employees and patrons, including families. It's a fact: Despite our robust medical district, Richmond County ranks 124th out of 159 Georgia counties in health--while others with smokefree ordinances rank in the top 10, 20 and 30.
BreathEasy Augusta is a coalition of individuals and community partners, including the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, American Lung Association, Family Y of Greater Augusta, Augusta University Health and the Georgia Cancer Center, working to educate the community, raise awareness of the dangers of secondhand smoke and advocate for smokefree workplaces.
